Root Canal

At the office of South Florida Laser Dentistry, we offer a wide range of treatments and services to help in restoring the health and function of your teeth. For teeth that are affected by a pulp infection, we offer root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy).

When is a Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

The pulp is the innermost portion of the tooth. It is very soft and houses blood vessels, tissues and nerves. It helps a tooth during developmental stages, and by the time a tooth is fully grown, the pulp starts to decrease in size. If the pulp becomes infected due to trauma, decay or contamination, root canal therapy can be used to save the tooth. Some of the common signs of a pulp infection include sharp, throbbing pain in the tooth that comes and goes, sensitivity, swelling in the gum around the tooth and discoloration.

Root Canal Procedure

Root canal therapy is performed under the effect of a local anesthetic. Generally, people perceive root canal as a painful procedure, but in fact, the pain of the infection is far greater than the procedure itself. Our office also offers sedation options when needed to maximize patient comfort.

During the root canal procedure, an opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp. The infected pulp is removed, along with any decayed portions of the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned, flushed and disinfected. Then, the tooth is filled with a filling material called gutta-percha. Following the procedure, a crown may be placed over the tooth to protect it from fracturing.
