Sedation is a process of calming a patient and decreasing anxiety with the help of a sedative. It relieves the discomfort and pain of the patient allowing them to have comfortable dental experience. At South Florida Laser Dentistry, we offer sedation dentistry for us patients to have anxiety-free dental experiences.

Levels of Sedation

  • Mild Sedation

In this level of sedation, the patient is conscious but relaxed.

  • Moderate Sedation

The patient is conscious, but it would seem like they are mumbling when speaking and they would forget much of the procedure.

  • Deep Sedation

This level of sedation keeps the patient on the edge of consciousness. Meaning, the patient can be unconscious but still awake.

  • General Anesthesia

Considered as the highest level of sedation, it allows the patient to be entirely unconscious during the whole procedure.

Types of Sedation Used in Dentistry

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is the most common type of sedation.  It is in a pill sedative that is taken orally an hour before the treatment starts. In this type of sedation, the patient is awake but relaxed during the dental procedure.

Inhaled Sedation

Inhaled sedation uses Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) that is inhaled from the mask which is placed over the nose that helps the patient to be relaxed. During the procedure, the amount of sedative can be controlled, and the effects wear off after the gas is turned off.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is only used at the part where the treatment will be done. It numbs the site so the patient will not feel any pain during the procedure.
