Losing one or more of our teeth affects our appearance, as well as our ability to eat, speak and chew with ease. It can also cause bone loss at the site of the missing teeth and increase the risk of developing systemic health disorders and nutritional problems. At the office of South Florida Laser Dentistry, we offer both traditional removable dentures as well as fixed dentures supported by implants.
Removable dentures are comprised of a plastic resin base which looks like natural gums and can fit over the bone ridge that holds the teeth. These dentures are held by a suction effect against the alveolar ridges. The prosthetic teeth on the denture base are made to look and work like your natural teeth. The palate of the mouth provides additional support to dentures placed in the upper jaw.
It will take you some time to adjust with your new removable dentures and speak and eat with them. Just like your normal teeth, your dentures need to be cared for. You should brush them after every meal and place them in a bowl of water or soaking solution after you remove them.
As the name suggests, fixed dentures are permanently attached to the mouth and are not removable. Fixed full dentures are attached using a small number of dental implants strategically placed at an angle to support a full set of teeth, while fixed partial dentures are anchored to the nearby remaining natural teeth.
The process of making custom dentures starts with taking an impression of the alveolar ridges in your mouth. The base of the dentures is made using this mold. A set of teeth with a natural looking smile is then created. To ensure that your bite is proper, the dentures are carefully fitted.
Dentures are an effective method of getting back the look and function of your teeth. To learn more, please contact our office at (954) 354-2332.
