The old saying, “Prevention is better than cure” holds true for your dental health as well. Preventive treatments are much easier and better than restorative ones. That is why at the office of South Florida Laser Dentistry, we offer dental sealants to protect your teeth from decay and cavities. Sealants are one of the greatest ways to protect the back teeth from decay. They are a thin coat of plastic that is applied on the rough surfaces of the molars in order to smooth them out and prevent the manifestation of plaque, bacteria and food.
Why do you need sealants?
The surfaces of your back teeth are irregular, containing grooves and depressions. These areas can house food debris, plaque and bacteria, as they cannot be easily cleaned using a toothbrush or floss. Dental sealants cover these grooves and fissures, making the surface of the tooth smooth, and thereby preventing deposits which can lead to decay. Sealants are mostly used for children after their molars erupt, but they work equally well on adult teeth.
Application of Dental Sealants
The procedure of applying dental sealants to the teeth is quick and painless. The teeth are cleaned to remove any plaque deposits and are then dried thoroughly. An etching gel is applied to further roughen up the tooth surface. This is done to help the sealant bond properly with the tooth. The etching gel is washed off, the tooth is dried again, and the sealant coating is then painted on the tooth. Once the sealant has dried and set, we check your tooth to make sure that all the grooves have been sealed.
