Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease generally begins as an inflammation of the gums, which if not treated in time, can further progress to affect the jawbone, ultimately causing tooth loss. At South Florida Laser Dentistry, we offer comprehensive treatment to control the progression of gum disease.

Treatments for Periodontal Disease

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling is a deep cleaning treatment that is performed in a numbed mouth, one quadrant at a time. It involves the cleaning of periodontal pockets to remove toxins, plaque and tartar. Root planing is then used to smooth the rough spots on the surface of the roots to help prevent reinfection. This procedure causes the periodontal pockets to shrink and aids healing of the gum tissue.
  • Gum Graft Surgery: Gum grafting procedures are used to treat gum recession. The procedure involves the placement of a small amount of new tissue in the area where gum recession has occurred. This covers the root surfaces and prevents further recession.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening: This is a surgical procedure used to treat gum disease where the bone, gum tissue, or both are removed to expose more of a tooth.
  • Pocket Reduction (Gingivectomy or Osseous Surgery): If scaling and root planing is not enough to help the periodontal pockets heal, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce the depths and make teeth cleaning easier.
  • Regenerative Procedures: these procedures are performed to restore bone and tissues that may have been lost due to advanced periodontal disease.
  • Sinus Lift: This procedure involves adding bone between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses. This is generally done before installing dental implants, if there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw, or if the sinuses are too close to the jaw.
  • Ridge Augmentation / Ridge Preservation / Bone Grafting: Bone grafting is done to add natural or artificial bone to the jaw. This is done when the jawbone density is not enough to support a dental implant. When bone grafts are added immediately after tooth extraction, the procedure is known as ridge preservation.
